WHY USE PAPER PRODUCTS FROM CERTIFIED FOREST?

Certification programs aim to slow global damage to forest and promote environmental responsibility. Consumers, public, and enterprise procurement policies in increasing numbers are seeking evidence of environmentally sound business practices. Public authorities and corporate procurement policies increasingly demand reassurance and proof from the paper industry that the wood they use for their products comes from sustainably managed forest. It is generally agreed that wood-based products have a better overall environmental record that competitor materials, but questions have arisen about the management of the forest from which the wood originates. Businesses therefore need a reliable and credible mechanism to prove to their customers where the wood for their products has come from.

WHAT IS CERTIFICATION?

The most effective way to guarantee that the paper products you sell come from legal and sustainable sources is by sourcing them from independently certified forest. Sustainably managed forest are those whose management implements performance standards based on internationally agreed environmental, social and economical requirements at local, national and global levels, and that does not cause damage to other eco-systems.

IN PRACTICE WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?

  • No more wood is harvested than is re-grown
  • Trees are replanted or naturally regenerated after harvesting
  • Local employment is encouraged
  • Forest are maintained as habitats for wild animals and plants
  • Functions of forest for the protection of soil and climate are protected

WHAT IS CHAIN OF CUSTODY?

Chain of Custody (CoC) certification is a mechanism fro tracing certified materials from the forest to the final products to provide certainty that the products or product line, about which a claim is being made, is linked to a certified forest.

FOREST STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL® (FSC®)

Features

The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) is an international organization whose mission is to promote responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC® sets forth principles, criteria, and standards that span economic, social, and environmental concerns for the preservation & sustainability of our natural wood resources. The FSC® standards represent the world’s strongest system for guiding forest management toward sustainable outcomes. These standards for forest management have been applied in over 57 countries around the world and are endorsed by every major environmental group.

FSC®-certification of a product ensures to the end-user, through independent 3rd-party audits, that the paper comes from well-managed forest and is manufactured by companies that adhere to strict environmental and socioeconomic standards.

Advantages

Customers buying FSC® certified paper and envelopes are assured that the paper used in the manufacture of these products originates from FSC® certified sources. FSC® certification has a strong recognition throughout the world as a credible program promoting the responsible use of the earth’s resources.

Benefits

FSC® certified products are considered more beneficial for the environment because they are made from certified fibers from well managed forest.

As an FSC® chain-of-custody certificate holder, FSC® certified products shipping from Drummond Press maintain the chain of custody for products shipped to other FSC® certified companies thereby maintaining the required traceability and accountability necessary.

Purchase of FSC®-certified paper and print products contribute to conservation, responsible management, and community level benefits for people near the forests that provide your paper.

FSC®-certified products takes business away from other companies that may still be supporting illegal, unsustainable, unverified logging activities.

While recycled fiber is a key element of the traditional model for responsible consumption, it is becoming increasing clear that forest management in the production of the wood used in paper manufacturing, has more fundamental importance than even recycled fiber. Only 35% of current consumption is met by using recycled fiber.

Buying FSC®-certified paper and carrying the FSC®-certification logo on your print products tells the world that you support the highest social and environmental standards in the market where you use paper

FSC® independently tracks, traces and identifies wood fibers from the forest through every step of the procurement process, confirming that each supplier along the way follows rigorous controls, management and reporting practices. FSC® has a strong “chain-of-custody” certification thereby prevents “Green Washing” i.e., making statements on a company’s environmental stewardship without proof or verification.

What is FSC® Chain-of-Custody?

Chain-of-Custody certification is linked to forest management certification, and is a certified system to track wood coming from certified forest through the entire supply-chain (i.e., harvesting, pulp, paper production, shipping, distribution, printing, to the end-user). Chain-of-Custody allows us, collectively, to prove to the end-user that we are providing products from companies that sets high standards that ensure forestry is practiced in an environmentally responsible, socially beneficial, and economically viable way.

SUSTAINABLE FORESTRY INITATIVE (SFI)

Features

SFI certified products are produced from SFI program certified paper produced at mills which utilize fiber certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) program. Fiber coming from this program is certified based on a comprehensive system of principles, objectives, and performance measures developed by professional foresters, conservationists and scientists that combines the perpetual growing and harvesting of trees with the long-term protection of wildlife, plants, soil, and water quality. Under SFI program participating companies plant or grow more trees than are harvested each year. This is mostly a North American initiative.

Advantages

Customers buying SFI program certified products are assured that the paper used in the manufacture of these products is made using sustainable fiber.

Benefits

Simply stated, sustainable forestry is working with nature to ensure the future of the nation’s forest.

PEFC

Features

The PEFC Council (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization, founded in 1999 which promotes sustainably managed forests through independent third party certification. The PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests. This is mostly a European initiative.

Advantages

PEFC provides a framework for the development of and mutual recognition of national or sub-national forest certification schemes that have been developed locally according to internationally recognized requirements for sustainable forest managements. PEFC provides an assurance mechanism to purchasers of wood and paper products that they are promoting the sustainable management of forests. PEFC contributes to the environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically viable management of forests for present and future generations. PEFC aims at strengthening and improving the positive image of forestry and wood as a renewable raw material.
